See Your Money Before Payday, Without Linking Your Bank
Most budgeting apps open with the same request: connect your bank. Hand over the login, let a third party sync your transactions, and in exchange you get a beautifully categorized history of money you already spent.
Plenty of people stop right there, and not because they're paranoid. Your bank credentials are the keys to everything, and a growing number of us simply don't want them living in someone else's database. The good news: for the question that actually matters day to day, the connection is unnecessary.
Forward beats backward
Bank sync gives you the past with perfect accuracy. But “can we afford this before Friday?” is a question about the future, and the future is something you already know without any connection at all: you know your bills, their amounts, their dates, and when you get paid. That's the whole dataset. It just needs to be laid out in front of you.
What a payday-by-payday forecast looks like
Picture your next 6 months as a single running ledger: each payday adds money, each bill between paydays takes it away, and the balance carries forward line by line. Two incomes on different schedules merge into one timeline. Yearly and quarterly renewals drop in on their real dates. What you get is a curve of your actual balance through time.
One number on that curve is worth more than everything else: the lowest projected balance, the lowest point your money will hit in the next 6 months and the date it happens. If that number is comfortably above zero, you can relax. If it dips near zero in March, you know today, months early, while there's still time to move a payment, trim a renewal, or build a buffer.
Privacy isn't the price of clarity
Everything above runs on numbers you type into a sheet yourself. ClearToSpend is built exactly this way: a Google Sheets template in your own Drive, no bank connection, no account, no app permissions, no subscription. You type your balance in; that's the whole integration. The Dashboard answers today's question (what's left to spend before payday) and the Forecast answers the long one (where is my money headed).
Setup is about 30 minutes: your balance, your bills, your paychecks. After that, a check-in takes about a minute, whenever you choose to do it.
